Writing Family: A memoir workshop.November 9 , 4 sessions

An ONLINE writing workshop for Fiction and Non Fiction writers. Open to ALL levels.

STARTING November 9

4 classes. Every Saturday at 11-1pm EST

In this four week course, we will workshop pieces that involve writing about family (fiction or non fiction) . Using Annie Ernaux’s award winning memoirs as a tool to learn how write about personal experiences, Hemon’s memoirs on how to create fictional characters out of real people and also how how to use detachment and space when writing about the personal.

We will also study other memoirists such as Rilke, Herve Guibert and others .

Please keep in mind that sometimes writing about personal experiences can be challenging and emotionally demanding. I must implore that you be prepared for this even as we try to create a safe environment to workshop your pieces.

Instructor: Buku Sarkar.

Buku is a fiction writer and photographer on the side. She earned her MA in Creative Writing from University of East Anglia and her BA in Honors Writing from The New School. Her first book was published earlier this year, a collection of short stories titled Not Quite A Disaster After All. But asides, she has written for various magazines including NYRB, NYTimes,  Sewanee Review, where she was awarded the Andrew Lytle Best Short Story of the year; Threepenny Review, ZYZZYVA, Huffington Post. 

She has a background in publishing and journalism and recently guest edited issues for the KGB Literary Journal.

What Happens Now? Once you’ve paid/registered for the class, you will receive a confirmation email that is automated. That means you are indeed registered.

A week or two before class is due to begin, I will write to you all and explain what happens, the structure of the class, what to expect, what to bring etc.

Please also note, there will be short texts assigned to read and small passages to write. They won’t be long and laborious. I know we have other lives.
